What Is Cord Blood Banking?

Cord blood is the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta after a baby is born. It contains hematopoietic stem cells — blood-forming cells that can develop into different types of blood cells. Banking means collecting and storing this cord blood for possible future use.

Medical Uses of Cord Blood Stem Cells

Cord blood stem cells are used in transplantation for certain blood, immune and inherited metabolic disorders.

Blood Disorders

Cord blood transplantation may be used for certain blood diseases and disorders.

Immune Disorders

It may be an option in the treatment of some immune-system conditions.

Inherited Conditions

Cord blood transplantation is used for certain inherited metabolic diseases.

Research

Researchers continue to study cord blood and stem cells in other areas of medicine.

Future Research

Some potential applications remain experimental and are still being studied.

Important to Know

Whether stored cord blood can be used depends on the medical situation and other factors.

How Cord Blood Banking Works

01

After Birth

After the baby is born and the umbilical cord has been clamped and cut, remaining cord blood may be collected.

02

Collection

The blood is collected from the umbilical cord into a collection bag. The process occurs after separation of the baby from the cord.

03

Testing & Processing

The collected unit is transported to the cord blood bank for testing and processing according to the provider's procedures.

04

Storage

Eligible cord blood is cryopreserved and stored under controlled conditions for possible future use.

Understanding Your Banking Options

Cord blood may be donated to a public bank where available, or stored privately for a family's potential future use.

Public Cord Blood Banking

With public banking, eligible cord blood is donated and may become available to a suitably matched patient who needs a stem-cell transplant. Availability and donation requirements depend on the programme and hospital.

Donated cord blood is generally not reserved exclusively for the donor's family.

Private Cord Blood Banking

Private banking stores a baby's cord blood for potential use by that child or, depending on compatibility and the medical situation, another family member. Fees and storage arrangements vary between providers.

Private storage does not guarantee that the cord blood will be suitable or needed for future treatment.

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Cord Blood Bank

Is the bank appropriately licensed or accredited for its services?

How is the cord blood collected, transported, processed and stored?

What testing is performed before the unit is accepted for storage?

What are the enrolment, collection and ongoing storage fees?

What happens if the collected cord blood does not meet storage requirements?

How would the stored unit be released if it were medically needed?

What happens to stored samples if the company stops operating?
