Newborn sleep can feel unpredictable. In the early weeks, your baby is still adjusting to life outside the womb and doesn't yet follow the same day-and-night rhythm as adults.
Here are a few gentle ways to support better rest for both baby and you.
1. Understand Newborn Sleep Patterns
Newborns usually sleep in short stretches throughout the day and night. Frequent waking is normal, especially because babies need to feed regularly.
2. Keep Day and Night Different
During the day, let normal household light and sounds continue. At night, keep lights dim and interactions calm and quiet. Over time, this can help your baby begin recognising the difference between day and night.
3. Create a Simple Bedtime Routine
Your routine doesn't need to be complicated. A diaper change, feeding, dimmed lights and a quiet cuddle can gradually become familiar signals that it's time to rest.
4. Watch for Sleepy Cues
Yawning, looking away, becoming quieter or getting fussy may mean your baby is ready for sleep. Responding before your baby becomes overtired can sometimes make settling easier.
5. Keep Baby's Sleep Space Safe
Place your baby on their back for every sleep on a firm, flat sleep surface designed for infants. Keep pillows, loose blankets, toys and other soft items out of the sleep area.
6. Don't Expect a Perfect Schedule
Newborn sleep changes frequently, especially during growth spurts and developmental changes. A flexible rhythm is often more realistic than a strict schedule during these early months.
7. Share the Load When You Can
If you have support available, allow someone else to help with diaper changes, settling or household tasks so you can get some rest too.
A little reminder from Bump to One 🤎
There's no need to compare your baby's sleep with someone else's. Every baby develops at their own pace.
Take it one night at a time, mama.
