Starting solids is an exciting milestone, but it can also bring lots of questions. When should you start? What foods should you offer? What if your baby refuses?
Here are some simple tips to make the journey a little easier.
1. Start When Your Baby Is Ready
Many babies begin solids at around 6 months, when they show signs of readiness such as being able to sit with good head control and showing interest in food. Follow your healthcare professional's advice for your baby.
2. Begin With Simple Foods
Start with soft, age-appropriate foods and textures that your baby can safely manage.
3. Offer Variety
Gradually introduce different tastes, textures and food groups. Early exposure to a variety of foods can help your little one become familiar with different flavours.
4. Introduce Common Allergens Carefully
Common allergenic foods can be introduced in age-appropriate forms when your baby is ready for solids. Introduce them carefully and follow your healthcare professional's advice, especially if your baby has eczema, a known allergy or other risk factors.
5. Let Baby Explore
Mess is part of learning! Allow your baby to touch, smell and explore food instead of focusing only on how much they eat.
6. Never Force a Bite
If your baby turns away or closes their mouth, take a break. You can always offer the food again another day.
7. Make Mealtimes Positive
Sit together when possible and keep the atmosphere relaxed. Your baby learns a lot simply by watching you eat.
A little reminder from Bump to One 🤎
Every baby is different. Starting solids isn't about how quickly your baby finishes a bowl — it's about discovering new tastes, textures and skills together.
Go at your baby's pace and celebrate every little step.
